I"m confused about luggage/carry on / messenger bag - ideas?

I don't know what's a splurge / normal spend
and
Do I need a messenger bag rather than my regular pocketbook?

Also - is there a 'best size luggage'

I would suggest getting a messenger bag or fanny pack for personal items. You’ll appreciate being more hands- free. I also used a backpack versus a carry-on suitcase last time I traveled and it was very convenient.

Where are you going? If it's international, sometimes rules are different from the US.

In general, I find it best to avoid checking baggage. Unless you're going for a long time, you can probably do great with one carry-on and one "personal item."

Some airlines weigh your bags as well as measure them, but don't weigh your personal item.

Many people like the carry-on rolling bags with the universal wheels. I personally prefer either my trifold hanging carry-on garment bag (for nicer things) or my bag with backpack straps, which can hold more and is lighter than a rolling bag. Depends on the circumstances.

Plan your packing carefully. Most people overpack. Look to mix and match. You might also like compression packing bags, which can help you fit more into your suitcase.

For my personal item, I use a backpack, which holds my small purse and a neck pillow, as well as anything else I want. I also wear layers, and travel with lots of pockets.

I use a small purse with a long enough strap to wear messenger style. I take a backpack for a personal item and stick my purse into the backpack just before takeoff.
