My son got his dtap at 16 months, 2 years and 3 years. Now at 5 years he got his 4th one.
The polio was given at 16 months, 2 years and 5 years.
The doctor said hes done with dtap and polio. No more boosters are necessary. However, at home I realized tht the recommended schedule is 5 dtaps and 4 polios and the school also requires 5 and 4.
Is it because it was delayed he no longer needs a 5th dtap and 4th polio?
Anyone knows whether delaying causes some vaccines to fall away?
Thank you!

The first 3 shots, given at 2, 4, and 6 months are given that frequently because the immunity wears off quickly in early infancy, leaving the baby vulnerable to pertussis.

Yes, because he received his 4th Dtap and 3rd Polio over the age of 4, he does not require the 5th Dtap or 4th Polio. This occured because of the delayed vaccines/ages that he received them. (I'm very familiar with this. I deal with the vaccine schedule daily in my job as a nurse).

Yes and you also get to skip Rotavirus vaccine which is only given to infants.

Hypothetically, would you know what would be recommended for a child who never had a vaccine until after 4 years old then? Which would be skipped entirely?

Nothing would be entirely skipped. You would only require one HIB and one Prevnar instead of 3 and 4, respectively. Those 2 vaccines are no longer required at the age of 5, so if you waited until 5, you wouldn't give those 2.

Wow! So is that like 7 vaccines less in total?
In such a case - why not wait to vaccinate?
(Asking as a mom of fully vaccinated kids on a reg schedule)

Yes. People don’t wait for various reasons. 1. They don’t believe vaccines are harmful 2. They would like to protect their child under 4 from any of those diseases 3. They send their child under 4 to daycare/ school and the vaccines are required 4. They do what’s recommended and don’t know or care to know which vaccines they might be able to skip.

Actually the reasoning for OP's child to have 1 dtap and 1 polio fall away is because the first one was administered after age 1 AND the last one was given over age 4.
Additionally if a child who delayed till after 1 got the 3rd dtap after 7, they only need 3.
