understated, unostentatious, unpretentious.
"Straightforward" conveys more of a sense of honesty and plain speaking than a horror of ornamentation, while "unsophisticated" carries a hint of disdain. (Besides, simplicity done right can be the height of elegant sophistication.)

I understand what you're saying but I think in the context of gift-giving, it was pretty clear which definition of simple the OP had in mind.

I'm here in Crown Heights and the sourdough bread sold here can be great as a gift.
I don't know where to buy it in Monsey but here in Crown Heights, people are going crazy over it and can't stop eating it. Anyone would appreciate it as a gift.
