Is this normal? My two ds's, 4 and 5 years old, break quite literally every toy we give them. Especially the 5 year old. Any toy car, flashlight, plastic animal, toy phone, anything ends up being broken after a few days. It doesn't end there. Dh's and my things also get broken. Or lost - taken away and left in odd places. Puzzle pieces, pens, magnet tiles, lego all get lost, dispersed throughout the house and garden. So do shoes. Tonight ds 5 damaged a valuable toy that he got from his grandma abroad and that can't be replaced here. He's so utterly careless! Dh and I weren't like that as children. We still have some of our own decades old toys in boxes, unbroken. Why are our children so ruthless towards possessions, their own and ours?

First of all today's toys are made of junk, so you can't compare them to toys from 25-45 years ago. But secondly, some kids are mazikim by nature. The only thing you can do is keep breakables out of their reach and lecture and lecture and lecture and lecture again about stuff they do manage to break. Don't give them long lectures obviously, but repeat "We have to be gentle" as much as needed.

I don’t think 5 year olds should be given valuable toys.
