I see a lot of recipes calling to layer the potatoes at bottom of crockpot, then meat and then barley, beans etc. What is the reason for this?

I don't think it makes much difference to the taste of the chulent. I put in the meat first and then the potatoes, then add in beans and whatever grains I'm using. That way the smaller ingredients fall down in the spaces between the potatoes etc. If I put the beans in first, the meat and potatoes would sit on top of them, and it would take up a lot more space.

By the time you serve it everything is mixed up anyway.

I like crunchy barely. It only gets crunchy if it's near the top

Convenience? I mean, I don’t follow a recipe, but that’s kind of how things just naturally go in to my crockpot... all of this ingredient, then all of that ingredient.... it all melds together so no point to bother mixing, trying for even distribution throughout.

I always want the potatoes on top so they get the brownest possible.
