I'm looking into having a full neuropsych eval done on my almost-7-year-old.

I got Dr. Shmuel Mandelman and Dr. Malky Zacharowitz as my top choices.

Who would you recommend? And why?

I’ve been to dr Mandelman with my son- he seemed to be on point, yeshivish type so you and your child will need to relate to that. Didn’t come out especially wiser but then again I sorta knew what I’d be hearing. I took a few classes with dr zacharowitz and was always extremely impressed by her. She’s kind and understanding, and seems to be very thorough.

Some basic intake. Spoke to my husband and I for a little then to my son for a little. Then did some sort of computer “game” to analyze his impulsivity levels

That’s a normal full analysis?
If he spoke to you and you explained that your son was impulsive, why did he have to prove that? And what about all the other aspects? I’m curious how other evaluations look...

We saw Dr Zacharowitz a few years ago. She was very thorough, intake with parent, 5-6 sessions of testing, school observation and then feedback session with both parents. It wasn't cheap but we got a thorough and clear assessment. She was also very honest when we spoke with her on the phone, stating clearly what she felt she could and couldn't offer us so we could make an informed decision whether or not to do the eval.

No that was not a full neuro psych evaluation- he felt that was unnecessary.

I’ve never used Dr. Zacharowicz but I’ve heard great things. I’m pretty sure she does a full psychological evaluation but not a neuropsych. In most cases a neuropsych isn’t necessary, but she would refer you to a neurologist if it was.

I had the same experience with Dr. Mandelman and the info was unhelpful since it was not specific to my child. However since it was not a full neuropsych we are comparing apples to oranges.
I heard that Dr. Mandelman’s full testing is excellent.

When does mandelman do the full testing? How can it be justified as per another thread that he charges $500 just to talk to parents and child? My question was if that’s considered a normal “assessment” and I see that it’s not.

I called Dr. Mandelman's office. They told me he rarely does those in-depth neuropsych evaluations. He tests/assesses the child for 1.5 hours and gives you a diagnosis. The cost is $500.

We've already gotten an autism diagnosis from a 1 hr session with Dr. Soffer. (We needed this to get ABA services.) Our speech therapist brought up the possibility of anxiety causing some of his language delays.

I need more info as to what is at the root of his issues and how we would go about helping him.

Is Dr. Mandelman the right person for this?

OP you mention that your child had an ASD. Anxiety often runs in conjunction with autism. What are you hoping to gain with further testing? Do you have a good LBA?

ABA hasn't started yet. We're still waiting for approval from the insurance carrier.

The speech therapist feels like a large part of his issues might be coming from anxiety. He isn't making any headway with him.

I want to find out what's at the root of the problem. (Is that even possible?) Is it the autism causing the language issues? Is it the language issues causing the social-offness? Is it partially anxiety?

Or is there no way of knowing what exactly is going on?

When we saw Dr Zacharowitz she was able to identify multiple concerns and differentiate what was going on. She gave us 2 definitive diagnoses and a couple of things to watch and rule out down the line. She was very thorough and good at getting to the root of the issues so we would know how to address it.
Op, it's a tough place to be. Hashem should send you the right shaliach for the answers you are seeking and lots of progress and nachas. Miracles do happen, where my child is today is an absolute miracle!!

Don’t take dr soffer diagnosis of ASD too seriously any kid that walks through her door gets that diagnosis.

I think you will get a lot of clarity if you will be assigned to a good LBA.

If you want to get to the true root of the problem, you can look into seeing a functional medicine doctor instead. They are the ones that will look at the child as a whole instead of treating each symptom separately and with a different specialist. Many symptoms could have one root cause. There’s labwork they can run (that conventional doctors would not run) to figure out what’s going on inside the body that is causing these different symptoms, and put the pieces together.
