If you only go in to say mazel tov and you're not very close to the person? Also if you do stay for the meal what would you give for someone distant vs someone close...thanks!

No gift unless staying for the meal.
Sometimes I’ll buy something pretty if I really like the person, and I’m not going bc I just don’t feel like staying for the meal.

If you’re close enough to be invited, and close enough to get dressed and show up, you’re close enough to give a gift. Much smaller if you only stay a short while. A gift card to a local wine store that would cover a decent bottle of wine (or a bottle of wine). A small gift from their registry, like a hand mixer, or kitchen linens.
We generally give $360 for friends to $540 for very close friends.
