Hi,
My baby was born with a funny shaped head and with time, it developed into a very flat head. We went to a few Dr.'s for opinions who all said it is purely cosmetic and won't cause health issues but it's up to us if we want to go the helmet option. It won't get much better on it's own. His head looks very flat, almost a 90 degree angle in the back. We decided to go with a helmet because he's getting older and this is the only time we can fix it and don't want to regret it later on (he's 8 months). We just got the helmet and I am having such a hard time with it. I want to cry every time I see him in it. I won't take him outside like that and am super self conscious. Looking for chizuk here.
Anyone put baby in helmet and can offer advice?
Baby does not seem to mind it, it's just me who's having a VERY hard time.
Thank you All!

I didn't even think twice about getting a helmet for my flat headed baby. It is pretty common and I don't think people will stare. Maybe they'll look at how cute the baby looks. People would rather stare at a baby with an oddly shaped head then with a helmet.
If there's a solution to fix his head shape, please do it. He may end up with a weird looking miss proportioned head his entire life.

True, you're 100% right. If I can prevent him from an oddly shaped head alter in life then I owe it to him.
How old was your baby when you started? How long did it take? I really hope he can have it off before summer when we'll be outside more.

My baby was almost 3 months and it took about 6/7 months. 8 months is pretty late to start, the head isn't so soft anymore, so you can expect it to take a little longer. They look so cute in a helmet!

My twins were both born with really weird shaped heads and 1st the drs kept saying it would get better on it's own. After a while of it getting worse I pushed for the helmets. Best decision possible, they had it for 4 and 5 months and now their heads both look completely normal. Was difficult in the beginning but it's pretty common and no one stares or made any comments about it. Dont feel bad about it you're doing ur baby a huge favor by fixing it now when he/she doesnt know the difference as opposed to not fixing it then the child would have to live with a weird head for the rest of their life.

I really don't think he looks cute in it! Maybe I'm just immature..he's my first and I'm still young, but he is waayy cuter without it Wink
We would have started younger and I wish we did but all the Dr.'s said it will get better with tummy time. It got a tiny bit better but after insisting on a referral to the specialist, he was measured and watched and the improvement was so small that he said it's never gonna look regular without helmet. By the time he was measured then fitted, and after waiting so long in between appointments, he's 8 months soon to be 9 months Sad. I really hope it doesn't take too long.
Did your Dr. recommend helmet therapy? or your decision?
Sorry for so many questions just I don't know anyone who did it and feel like ppl think I'm crazy for putting baby in helmet when it's cosmetic..

My baby had a helmet. It was super hard as it was also my first baby and some people had less than helpful comments.
I made sure she always looked clean and cute and decorated the helmet with the cutest stickers I ordered from blingyourband.com and just pushed through but so worth it!!! I have a niece who also had a flat head and her mom refused to do helmet and honestly she looks misshapen even when looking at her from the front.

Just make sure to follow the instructions for cleaning the helmet or it will start to stink especially as the weather gets warmer.

If you want to talk to someone who's been there you can PM me I will post under my sn.

I recently read in one of the Jewish magazines (sorry, don't remember which one) of a lady that draws cute designs on the helmet, for example to make it look like a pilot's helmet. Maybe that would be an option

My friend's baby wore a helmet for 8 months after surgery. She had their 1st helmet painted. She said her name is Paula, lazardo_art. It was aviator style and adorable. It was featured in Hamodia. She painted their second helmet herself and it looked great. I don't think she minded the helmet, neither did the baby. It's pretty common for flat head now.

My baby had a traumatic birth that resulted in a very oddly shaped head. As he got older, it became even more pronounced and began to develop a flat head with it. I took him to a PT who does a form of manual therapy and she was Bh able to correct it in less than 10 sessions. Let me know if you want more info. PT Dr that I went to is in New Jersey.

The PT was in addition to a helmet or just PT?
They usually give PT if the head shape is not proportioned and can be an issue. If it's just for cosmetic, you usually don't get approved for PT.

Doctor said it was purely cosmetic. we were not approved for PT. I paid completely out of pocket for it. Not all PTs have the specific training to correct head shape. The one we went to did. If you are in or near New Jersey and want her info I can share it with you.

He did not need a helmet at all.

Stick to the helmet . You cant go wrong with it . Would you rather your kid have a funny looking head for the rest of his life? Do the helmet . No one cares.
