File your taxes free in you make less than $69,000. But you must go directly to IRS.gov/freefile. If you try to do it from an ad on Google, you will end up paying for the service. The tax preparation companies have misleading ads on Google that tell you that it's free but it's not. The only way to get the free service is from the IRS.gov web site.

Just a heads up - federal tax filing is free but state tax filing is not. It may not be worth it to go through this if you have to pay for state filing anyway.

I've been using CreditKarma for free, works really well and does state for free also.

Good to know! Someone told me that she tried filing using a free service and she was charged for state. So glad to hear that not all are like that.
