When that happened to my mother they told her to do lots of steam. Hot steamy shower, stay in the bathroom, maybe a saline nebulizer etc

Is your cough productive - I.e. are you coughing up phlegm. That's actually a good thing because it means your body is working hard to rid itself of the inflammation.
Hot tea or chicken soup help as does any steamy stuff you can breathe in which will help loosen whatever very thick secretions are in your lungs. Take a very hot steamy shower or put your head over a pot of water with a towel if these are physically possible for you to do. Steam is very helpful in any form as it loosens up the secretions and makes them easier to cough up.
Cough medicines can help but you don't want the kind that suppress the cough - you want the ones that act as expectorants - e.g. help your coughs be productive so that you cough up as much phlegm as possible.e.
