This is kind of random but what language does one use to ask someone which Chasidish sect they belong to? I don’t want to sound rude. Is sect even the right word? Thank you

And don’t be surprised if they answer- none! There are a lot of us who are kind of neutral: chassidish but don’t belong to any particular group!

Maybe you can first confirm by asking "are you chassidish?" and then go on to ask which chassidus.

I personally would not mind someone approaching and being friendly and ending the chat with "lovely getting to know you, can I ask are you chassidish? I don't know many chassidim and really glad to get to know you, what chassidus...."

What's the big deal? You can just ask "what chassidus are you" usually they'll be proud to answer.

I ask that all the time! I find that asking what school their kids go to is not necessarily helpful, because their chassidus might get not have a school in their area (or maybe they don’t have kids). But lots of times I will just ask “are you part of a certain kehilla or a neutral chassidus?” My husband, when talking to a man, will often ask “what’s your chatzer?” Literally— what’s your courtyard (ie- which chassidishe court do you belong to.”)

Well actually I had someone asked me this question (in a weird convo in camp as teens)
It went something like this
Her: װאס זענען ענק?
Me: אידן
Her- getting frustrated: יא, אבער פון װעם האלטן ענק?
Me: די אייבערשטער!

She still went further because she wanted to hear my (non existing 😂 lol) political views

Sincere question: How can one be Chassidish without affiliation to a particular Chasdidus? How do you know your minhagim? Who is your Rebbe? How do you pick schools?
