I met DHs aunt for the first time this weekend. She's the sweetest nicest lady.
She's from a chassidic community in Monsey and she told me she doesn't drive-as in, she never got her driver's license and she doesn't plan to.
I was floored, I never heard of this before.
I asked her why, she said this considered not tzanuah in her community for a woman to drive. It's considered very "out there" and immodest.
Ok I can hear that.
So I asked her if she's home all day and doesn't leave the house. (Pre-corona hahaha.) She said no, she goes to plenty of stores, she is not locked inside, either her husband drives her or she takes a taxi.
So I asked her what's more immodest about driving than sitting in a taxi with a strange man, or being in a store in public, but she didn't have a good answer. She said that's how it's done. Also asked her if she minds and wishes she could drive, she said it doesn't bother her at all.
Does anyone know how come this is done? No bashing or yelling please just calmly does anyone have a good answer thanks.

It’s not modesty, I don’t know what it is. Maybe they want to lighten the traffic. What’s up with all these chassidisha threads these days?

There are many threads about it. I wrote long posts there, but in short it’s more tradition because there is no one reason people agree on, and all of the reasons people do give aren’t logical.
It wasn’t tznius in the 1950’s and now it’s become the norm and seen as a red line everyone is afraid of crossing.
Period. Now go read the old threads. There are probably about 50+ pages to keep you busy.

As a side point, how did you meet her if everyone is supposed to be quarantined?

Ye, also we are bored as well.
Let's turn this around.

How come you married into a chassidish family? Was your husband an outcast?
What happened?
Come in with exact details please.

Hey all,

I'm not a troll and I didn't start any other threads on chassidut today.
Yes, I'm pretty new here. I didn't know there were other threads on the topic. I will go search them.

And we met her last night because we went to pick up a borrowed carseat that we needed. And she mentioned she doesn't drive cuz I was.
I'm not bored, just curious as I hadn't heard of this before.
And no my husband is not an outcast. He has some random great aunt that's chassidic, how am I supposed to know why she's chassidic, and her brother, DHs grandfather is not.
C'mon you all don't have to be mean.
I'll go search the older threads now.

I honestly do not believe that there's a women out there that did never hear that chassidish women don't drive. And I do not believe that someone thinks that women who don't drive sit locked home all day. I'm sure everyone knows that driving isn't the only way of getting around.
And many many many chassidish women do drive, especially in Monsey.
And if you married a chassidish guy, there's no way in the world that you didn't know that chassidish women don't drive. Just no way.
OP, there are countless threads on this, do a search.
Someone sounds too bored with quarantine already.

Seriously. Gerrer marriages, and now this. People have nothing better to do now? At the risk of sounding like a Rebbetzin, go say some tehillim if you're bored. There's a long list of cholim who could use it.

(I'm sure it's very important for chassidishe women to drive right now. Where are they going again?)

How long are you on here?
She claims she married a chassidish guy. If so, this shouldn't come as such a shock. Just makes no sense.
