We don't even know if it does that. What we have right now are some anecdotal reports that it was effective.

Everything about this virus is new territory. But the two drugs the president mentioned today look promising based on the information available.

They're looking at medications already on the market for other uses, as approving such medications will be much faster and simpler than creating, approving and bringing to market entirely new drugs.

And compassionate use and Right to Try, as another poster mentioned, are important steps that will allow very ill patients to have access to these potentially life-saving drugs.

So what's being reported here is that the combination of this drug with Azithromycin (marketed as Azenil in Israel) - an antibiotic that is usually prescribed for pneumonia, is the cocktail that has been proven to be effective in severe cases.

That’s interesting!
Azithromycin is also used ppx for lung scarring (in bronchiectasis) to minimize exacerbation. They don’t really know why, but it helps with the inflammation and healing.

(To my medically untrained mind, with my limited knowledge, based on what I’m reading it seems like what covid19 is doing to some people’s lungs is giving them a severe bronchiectasis or something similar.... anyone with medical knowledge can chime in on this pls?)

Whatever it is, may Hashem guide the drs & scientists etc in revealing the right cure ASAP.

It was not “approved by the fda for treatment of Covid” if you watch dr robert’s YouTube’s about this he explains why it won’t be. What the fda did approve was adding many doses to the national stockpile. Any medical dr can Prescribe any medication to treat any illness. Medical doctors have been prescribing this recently because some data has shown that it helps. It also has been shown to do more harm than good. But it’s up to each individual doctor and will not be getting fda approval for this use specifically
