If it applies to you, you get to use it. (Or if it's someone's name--don't call them something else just because the word can be derogatory.)

Can you imagine being named Frummy Schwartz, and being told that your names are not politically correct?

I have only ever heard it as a negative term. My experience is in the US, so it could be that elsewhere, the expression is neutral.

Honestly, I immediately thought of you, FF. Call me

OP, I'd say, it depends on context. Could be pejorative, could be positive.

I never knew "frummie" had a negative connotation until I read it on another thread. For those of you who are offended, please explain what the word means to you. I'm from the States and am old enough to be the mother of 90% of imamothers. It certainly wasn't offensive way back when.

I would guess we’re around the same age and I take it negatively. To be frum is not, but a frummie is. To be called a almost anything is not the same thing as being something. Not that this is negative, but do you hear the difference between you are beautiful and you are a beauty?

I am in my 40s and grew up pretty MO in the US, in an OOT frum community of mixed hashkafos. A frummie was anyone to the right of you religiously who seemed to think the rest of us weren't religious enough. It was used for people who were trying to change the way things were done in schools and shuls, for example, or for someone who not only didn't wear pants herself but also thought I shouldn't be wearing them, and somehow communicated that, directly or indirectly.

There was an air of "the frummies are ridiculous, because they're the ones doing more than they need to", so it said something about the speaker too. But we never thought this about people who didn't try to push anything on anyone. Though that got complicated when the frummies started to outnumber the rest of us somewhere and by sheer numbers, started changing the way things were done and the way a place felt.

The original name is Frimet or Frumet. Also similar is Fruma. Such a severe name for a baby so they're nicknamed Frumy, Frummie or Frimy

it depends on the people using it & how the receiver takes it

commonly it's an insult ... but you wouldn't listen if someone were calling you purple with green polka dots & take it seriously

it's like saying "holier than thou"

In my experience, it connotes someone who is closeminded and self-righteous.
It is not about someone being machmir, it is about one who looks down on others.
