Why does someone believe you when you say there are 4 billion stars, but check when you say the paint is wet?

Tell anybody that you love their earrings and watch as their hands fly up to caress it.

Why do you think I would believe you because you say there are four billion stars?

When the waiter says to be careful, the plate is hot, people usually touch it to see.

1. It won't make a diff if there are 4 million stars, 4 million and 1, or even 5 million. They may believe you. They may not. But they don't care to argue.
2. It may very possibly matter to them if the paint is wet. Plus they are able to confirm it themselves, so why not?

Maybe because the paint has a tendency to dry and if it was wet half an hour ago it could still be dry enough now to touch. At some point wet paint becomes dry, no?
But the stars shine one for a bit longer than half an hour...
