My kids schools have been closed from mid March but (being self employed), I didn’t realize I could apply for pandemic unemployment and just not work.

I just applied 2 days ago showing school closures dates in March.

Do you know if they give it retroactively or only from when you apply?

Yes retroactive.
( due to pandemic only - generally it does not .)

Any idea how long it takes from applying till approval, till getting the money?
Do I have to certify Weekly before getting approved?

There’s no way to know right now how soon you’ll get the money.
But yes you need to certify weekly even before getting Approved
