My very capable friend has been working years doing bookkeeping for her boss. While her boss is begging her to stay, she decided she definitely wants to open her own bookkeeping company and work from her own office.
The problem is:
How can she get clients? This is proving very difficult for her because while she's great with bookkeeping she doesn't have that large circle of acquaintances that would bring her a flow of customers.
Should she charge by the hour or by the month?
How much is the normal fee?
Any information will be greatly appreciated!

The people I know who have successful bookkeeping companies either started small, and didn’t need the income right away so were able to build up over time, or started up with a handful of clients while also working a regular job. They got their clients thru word of mouth.

When my DH started , his boss didn’t want him to leave so he worked as a “consultant” for them through his company for another year and his company got paid for his services. Because he was on his own terms he set the hours and was able to take on additional clients. But even though he had multiple clients he doesn’t necessarily get paid. Lots of clients don’t pay on time and there were months he went by without payment.
He had to take on another part time job working at an accounting firm so that he receives a guaranteed wage while still working on the side for some clients.
Also, some clients are just temporary. He fixes their books and helps them with their financials and audits and then he moves on. He does work onsite for many clients. Meaning that he goes in to meetings and has a desk set up for him at the companies he’s working with. He only works a little bit from his own office.
They get billed monthly . Billing is all dependent on what the job will entail. He doesn’t take on small scale jobs. It’s not worth it. He would rather have two clients that he works for almost full time than lots of clients with small jobs.
