And what are they gonna do to the ones who don’t return it? Come after them? Yeah right. They won’t get most of them back. Do these tablets work for other things than the classes?

Many school systems provide iPads and/or computers for students to take home.

My understanding is that they can be remotely "locked" if they aren't returned or are reported lost or stolen and I would imagine there is something similar for the iPads being distributed by New York City.

Public schools are using a program called Teams by Microsoft which doesn't have some of the same issues as Zoom does in terms of hacking and privacy. My understanding is that the NY DOE is currently working on rolling it out for the public schools.

From what I read, users will be supplied with the information necessary to use and sign in for this App.

It would make sense to have your school contact DOE and find out how to implement "zoom" type of classrooms with the tablets supplied by the DOE.

New York City teachers are banned from using Zoom for virtual teaching after the Department of Education cited safety and privacy concerns. Schools are instead being directed to use Microsoft Teams, which the department has reportedly already started training teachers and staff to use.

Microsoft Teams is great!
We use it at work and I definitely recommend it

I see when ordering from the DOE that you need to enter the school name, do they report to the school which students ordered a tablet?
My DS's school won't officially allow giving a tablet for a child, but I wouldn't mind he should have some activities there.

It comes with specific pre installed apps.
You will not be able to access and play whatever you want...
