Hi,
My baby has issues with reflux, is always cranky etc. My friend told me about a letter to the editor about an article that was written. The woman wrote that her baby had issues with reflux etc and nothing was helping until finally they went to a specialist that said that her baby is allergic to formula.

Was wondering if anyone knows of such a specialist in NJ or the one she was referring to.

THanks!

While I haven't read the Ami article some of my children have suffered from milk and soy protein allergies that required special hydrolized protein formulas. (Such as Neocate) They were diagnosed by a gastroenterologist who is generally more willing to consider allergies/medication for reflux than a pediatrician who will attribute fussiness to colic/gas etc particularly if the baby is gaining well.

The formulas are expensive but insurance will often pay for them if you are persistent. Also if you are WIC eligible cost shouldn't be a problem.

Any pediatric GI should be able to help. Alternatively if you are nursing you can try an elimination diet and see if that works.

What kind of formula is baby on right now? You don't need to go to a Dr to try a hypoallergenic formula. You can try it yourself and see if baby is happier with it.
Alternatively, reflux is sometimes an undiagnosed tongue tie.

You don't need to go to a Dr to try it, but they can test baby's stool for occult blood which is how allergy is often diagnosed. Additionally if you want to get insurance to pay for the formula or WIC, you usually need an MD to provide documented proof of allergy.

You can of course buy a can and see if it works too.
