Does the broccoli need to be cooked first? All the recipe say to do that but what for if it's going to be baked later?
Just defrost and mush up with rest of ingredients.
What am I missing?

Yes, I cook it for about 3 Minutes... very shortly...because otherwise it is not easy to process... but it could be that frozen broccoli is precooked... I use fresh broccoli...

I only cook it it if it is fresh - but normally I think it is a waste of fresh broccoli to use it for kugel.

I don't think the frozen broccoli is pre-cooked, but being frozen it soften much more quickly when it defrosts.

If I'm sauteing onions I might add the broccoli while they are still on the heat and leave it for a minute or two, but that is more about making sure the broccoli is defrosted and breaking up any big lumps than about cooking it.

I typically microwave frozen broccoli for about 3 minutes, so that I can squeeze out the water. I don't think it needs to be cooked. It just needs to be defrosted and drained well.

I don’t cook first. I buy chopped broccoli and mix in the rest of the ingredients.

Thanks all. Saved myself the extra step. Smile
Next time I'm going to buy chopped broccoli instead of florets; it's cheaper and easier to smush up.
