My wig gets matted near the neck area even if I only wear it for a short time.
Is there a product I can use that will prevent this from happening without damaging the hair??

Try no more tangles by Johnson and Johnson. Spray the nape of the neck every night and brush gently.

I was told this as well by my sheitel macher and it really helps.
I will just say my first wig I had, it matted up after a really short time of wearing it-the hair just wasn't good hair. When I bought a new one, I really noticed the difference, it takes so much longer for that to happen.
