My school does not have the boys learn anything by heart. I thought that it would be a good time for my 10 year old son to start learning. His rebbe said he should start with Brachos. So we took out a mishneh, and opened it up. Nu? what does he do? Just memorize it?

To learn mishnayot by heart?

I would not let him do it alone, but do it together, in a pair, that's easier and less lonely...

First read the mishna. and translate. Make sure every word is understood.
then recapitulate content.
Then try reconstructing it by heart.
Split mishna into short sentences.

It could also help to copy it, write it down...

Make sessions short, but repeat often.

In general, when you learn just vocabulary words, you need to forget & relearn 4 times before you remember...

So repetition is key.

And try to keep it relaxed, short... Investing more effort just makes learner tired. Better to keep it relaxed and frequent... It's just a question of repeating often.

So you can give clues very rapidly... there is no sense in him wrecking his brains, clue giving will help him remember next time... No advantage in him finding it...
Don't associate clue giving with anything negative... Always be encouraging, when you give clues...

Learning comes from repetition, not from remembering it the first time...

Just repetition helps...(at different times. 2-5 minutes, 4 times a day)

Do something he is familiar with. Repeat it over and over again. It helps to record it and listen to it over and over again.
