Hi, we're considering a move to PHX. We visited a little while ago and loved it. However, we couldn't get clear answers from people about how the various tuition tax credits and subsidies work. We didn't want to be too nosy, as we didn't even have a kid at the time.
But can someone familiar with PHX tell me how the various tax breaks work. There seem to be two different kinds of programs -- one involving tax credits for charitable donations, and the other that's purely a tax credit. But I could be wrong.
Are these various gov't subsidies only available if you make less than a certain income? Are they per kid, per family? Husband and I are both math/finance people and like details and numbers. If someone could explain exactly how these programs work, it would be great.
Separately, how generous are either the MO school (PHA) or the more yeshivish school (affiliated w Ohr Hatorah) with financial aid? Sticker price seems to be similar for the two schools. Is one more or less likely to work with families, versus saying "take it or leave it"?
Thank you very much!

There seems to be only a tax credit for donations which are then used to fund scholarships to the school. You can't designate the recipient although you can recommend a recipient - the actual recipient would depend on the policy of the school in terms of how it provides scholarships.
Its a tax credit which is not dependent on income. However, whether you receive any benefit in terms of a scholarship would depend on the policies of the specific school.

Thanks. I've heard that there's some sort of arrangement where A donates to the school to fund B's kid, and B donates to the school to fund A's kid. Is that how it works? How much can you even get from the tax credit?

Speak to Gaby Friedman at Torah Day School (which btw is not affiliated with any shul), she should be able to answer all your questions. You can call the school to get in touch with her.
