To Rose,

You can always give an $18 or $36 check for a gift. No one says it has to be a lot.

Yes, as a gift if you don't go.
In neighborhoods with homes with mortgaged of 4K/month, and tuition of 25K, you cannot show up and give that as a gift.

"Decent" depends on so many things. We live comfortably on what most would consider very little (less than 50k/year) we don't get any help from anyone but we also don't pay tuition(we homeschool), we rent, our son has no interest in sleepaway camp and the day camps in our area aren't expensive at all, we don't eat out ever and we only eat meat on Shabbat. We don't feel like we're lacking for anything. If we want to go on vacation, we save up and go on vacation. If our son wants to do something, we make it happen for him and he's learned how to be patient for the things he wants. If I want to buy new dishes or a bookcase, I'll save up and buy what I want. We live frugally but happily. We're almost always able to set aside money in savings each month, every once in a while something comes up that takes that money instead (need new tires, helping out a sibling, etc) but it's rare and doesn't really affect anything beyond not being able to put it in savings.

To ivory,

What do you use to keep track of all your expenses and how often do you track it? I find it a bit time consuming.

Before buying our house we went to mesila. They gave us a comprehensive tracking list We sit down every ms and log everything in

Or look for a nice looking but inexpensive gift at a discount type store instead of doing cash gift.

To ivory, do you use Microsoft excel to track your expenses or a financial website like mint?

We have never kept track of our expenses and this drives me crazy. My husband earns over 750K so he feels no need...
what does programs like messilah recommend? I would love to go to them but my husband refuses...he said he is not interested in someone telling him not to buy coffee or lunch every day etc.. when he can afford whatever he wants.

To indigo. You should feel very blessed that you’re husband earns such a salary. I hope HaShem continues to shower you with all that parnassah and you have the zechus to use it for Torah and chesed. What does he do to earn that salary?

Yeh definitely.but I wouldn’t say more than the average hard working man. He has an amazing staff, and he is great at delegating. He also learns 3x a day. Morning daf yomi and afternoon and At night a chavrusah and a Shiur.

Wow! You should feel blessed to have such a husband that makes learning a top priority even while running multiple businesses.

Amen Indigo! All should continue to go well

My husband is a rebbi
he earns 40,000
[tell me another profession that is still at the same cap salary since 25 years back?!]

we are on section 8, get fs and medicaid
[it's no picnic - the paperwork and scrutiny is the pits]
I can't earn too much doing what I like because I don't earn enough
so we can afford to be thrown off the progams
[this drives me insane]

we rent
I have seven children
I have no cleaning help
I do get a bit of tuition discount but really not much
Contrary to what people think rebbeim are not that much respected
nor
given discounts
It's tough but teaching is my husband's life calling
I daven and thank hashem for any tip that comes in

If you have children in a cheder and can afford to tip the rebbe - even $20-$50-$100 a month
you cannot imagine your schar
people donate to buildings etc
but noone thinks - how will the rebbe marry off? how is he paying bills?
save for a minority of parents who do
thank you!

I don't know of a solution
but I appreciate all who opened my eyes to see it's not all glory on the other side
[though in my life with the people I know it does appear to be]

To pumpkin,
Maybe your husband can tutor (if he doesn’t already) on the side to bring in extra money. Tutoring makes a lot of money these days.

We make around 70k.
We live in NY, our house payment is $2200.
We have 3 kids in school and expecting our 4th soon.
We live frugally and budget/track our spending.
I do have cleaning help for 3 hrs once a week.
No takeout.
No fancy clothing.
Happy and healthy BH.

This boggles my mind. I make more than that (75, 500) and have one kid who’s too young for school so just pay for minimal babysitting hours, live out of town with a much lower monthly mortgage and Bh we’re making it but I can’t imagine living on this salary with more kids and a much higher mortgage!

It's usually about 72k -take home pay.

house payments 2200
tuition 1800
groceries 800
insurance (not medical) $100
gas plus maintenance $100
utilities 250
cleaning help 160

It IS tight but we survive.
