We live abroad but are here for a short time I'm order to take care of some medical issues that have come up with my son who just turned one in April.
He was born prematurely and with some airway and breathing issues and has struggled in various areas bc of this .
Bc of his issues he has only started eating solids recently and since then it seems to be becoming clear that something seems to be very wrong digestively . ( he cries in pain from every single food we give him , even straight vegatable purées or chicken broth with only chicken and Water . He either throws up all his food or gets extremely constipated and after a few days poops out whatever food he ate completely undigested, even purées. )
He really really wants to eat and I'm at such a loss. Has anyone had a child with a similar issue and found a doctor in the tristate area that they would highly recommend ?
I am looking for a doctor who is smart and can't connect the dots of various interacting health conditions . Someone who will listen to us as parents and will do his best to help us find the source of the issue instead of resorting immediately to trials of medication or feeding tubes.
I'm more natural minded in general and am hesitant to put a child on medication but I understand it might be necc in the scenario . However I would like it to be a decision that actually makes sense and is thought through on the doctors part of that makes sense. Thanks in advance!

Dr. Joseph Levi in NYU
ETA He diagnosed a very rare issue in a very sick infant relative of mine that had multiple other specialists stumped, and that child is bh doing well now.

Dr Susan shulman is a brilliant pediatrician and genius diagnostician
Why don’t you go to her first for a full work up and let her tell you if you need a gastro and whom she recommends

Thanks so much for the recommendations. where is Susan Shulaman? I don't have so much time and am pretty sure he would need a gastro
I tried to call dr levys office last week but they are totally booked for a long time!

This!
And I don't know specific names of gastro there but Morgan Stanley Children's hospital at Columbia is top notch for children and I have been thrilled with all their doctors their as well as their radiology and surgical teams.

We used Dr. Amy DeFelice at Columbia. The hospital is tops for gastro issues.

Firstly, dr Schulman retired.....I’ve heard dr levy is excellent , when you called did you explain the urgency? Can you call Refuah institute and tell them your situation and see who they recommend and if they can get you in fast. Usually having a doctor call or Refuah who has pull can get you in rather then calling yourself and getting an appointment in weeks from now. Explain that he needs an emergency appointment and you came in to the states for this. I don’t think they would take it lightly if they hear a child at 1 can’t eat any solids and exhibits those symptoms. We have used Dr Simon Rabinowitz 718 818-1515 And was very happy with him just certain days he works I think in downstate clinic and not sure if you want to be waiting in a hospital setting waiting room at this time. If I remember mondays he’s in his downtown Brooklyn office and maybe another day a week in staten island, but I’m not sure.

Years ago I used Dr Rabinowitz mentioned above. He may have been good but his bedside manner in the other hand..
I’ve been happy with Dr Nancy Pittman in Mount Sinai. 212-241-5415. Haven’t needed her in a while but she was very good and sensitive. Not sure about appointment availability but you can give it a try.
Good luck!

Not sure what you’re referring to about his bedside manner, he is the nicest to parents and the kids, cares so much about his patients . Sorry you didn’t have that experience. I’ve been using him for years now. But like I said downside of it is his affiliation with downstate .. but I think he is affiliated with other hospitals

We used Dr. Ali Mencin in Columbia and couldn't be happier. He really really helped us and would get back to us between appointments, etc - really reccomend him! (Though idk how long it would take to get an appointment)

Yes. I use Dr. Levine for 2 of my kids and I am very happy with him but it does take long to get an appointment but I think if you tell them your from oot they will work with you. He is in the same office as Dr. Levy.
