Op, I totally get you. Just some suggestions - what works for me. I usually like to stick to dark colors - specifically black. Even if it gets boring, I find I'm happier when I look better- I try to dress it up with different necklaces.
I also like to get a top with raglan sleeves or batwing style - it has a slimming effect on me. Stripes don't work for me either nor does too long.
Right now I'm wearing a top I bought this year at Lingerie shop. Its cute summery and dressy. Company is Rikki Roy - sizing runs big. I'm wearing xl when I'm usually at least a 2x and sometimes bigger. I cannot send you the link cuz my filter blocks but its black, closed neck, batwing style, perfect length - a bit below waist. If you check the website you'll find it, one sleeve is different color from the elbow down its very cute and looks great!

Another vote for the esteez shirts. They make a cotton shell that can be worn itself because they have a relaxed fit version. I also wear a 2x-3x and the relaxed fit isn't too tight. As a shell, I wear the regular fit because I prefer that to be tighter.
They also make long sleeve tops that are a stretchy material, I don't know what material it is but they're so light weight and a pleasure to wear in the summer. She makes many dresses in the same fabric that are very versatile.
Besides for the right fit, they have many color options. The stuff is mostly solid and plain, but they do have a few patterns.

I don't have any of her tops, but I have several dresses and skirts, and the quality is excellent for the price. I have no qualms about recommending them.
