Thankfully he still sleeps in a crib and just relaxes in there while he’s up. But it sometimes takes him an hour or two to fall back asleep and then it’s hard for him to get up in the morning.
What could be causing these long wake ups? Once he’s out of a crib I’m worried he’ll come join me wide awake at 3 am and I cannot function when I’m sleep deprived. Any ideas?

I hear him on the monitor. Sometimes he talks and laughs to himself. It’s so cute but it’s 3 am!

There are just some kids who wake up in the middle of the night and lack the skills to transition smoothly into the next sleep phase. I think it's extremely common. It's a miracle your child isn't crying for you. By letting him lay there, you're actually letting him learn the skills he'll need to fall back asleep on his own. B"H. I wouldn't stress it.

He does but not long. He can’t function without at least a 20 minute nap.

I believe naptime is 12/12:30 at playgroup and he goes to sleep at 7:30.

Thats perfect for a kid his age. He should outgrow this waking up at 3am stage, but its very normal for kids his age to do this.
