do your kids not fast till chatzos? I thought that is pretty much standard in the year or 2 before bar/bas mitzvah.
I think its important for kids to have that feeling of I'm hungry but I can push myself to wait an hour, and if I can wait an hour I can wait 2 hours, and so on. it gives the kids confidence to know that they CAN fast when they need to. I think its important.

We are yekki and kids fast till chatzos.
Did you grow up that way?
Many ppl don’t do that.

Kids do not need to practice fasting except for Yom Kippur. There is a “minhag” that some people have to have kids fast 3 fasts before their bar/bat Mitzvah, but there is not really a source for this.
Can you explain why one should practice YK fasting? I never heard of this.

Of course. It’s an open Mishna.

As for practicing fasting, nope. This was my daughter's first official fast. She never practiced and she was fine, actually more than fine. She found things to keep her occupied and did fine the whole way through (the fast ended here at 8:07).
I dont think there is anything chinuchi about practicing to fast. They will get it eventually. They will have to. Smile

I never heard of this. (not arguing with you, genuinely asking to understand this. I never heard of this)
