would you? I am TERRIFIED of rodents. like prob an actual phobia. we looked at a house that had some evidence of a possible issue. im conflicted bec I like the house, but I am scared of moving into a new house and having to deal with this. is there a way to completely mouse proof a house? like that I can have peace of mind? I cant stop thinking about it and its making the whole house seem like a scary place to me.

If you get a cat you’ll never see a mouse.

Houses can come with many different problems that you may not know about until its too late. So you are lucky that you know that there is a mouse problem (what other problems are there that the seller is not telling you about?). You can contact an exterminator and ask if there is a way to permanently get rid of the mice then you can make the decision on if you want to buy the house depending on what the exterminator says.

IMNSHO, have a first-rate exterminator take a look at it as part of the inspection process. Ask if s/he thinks the house can be rodent-proofed, and how much it would cost.

YES! Of course there is! mice proofing will look for and patch up any wholes and mice should be gone! I actually had once I couldn't get rid, they came to recheck multiple times and what happened was the mouse stayed stuck inside so he actually opened from the inside a new whole to escape, after that was closed off I did not see them again.

Yes, and get a good exterminator. Or adopt a hungry cat.

They bring you the mice as presents. Dead or alive.

It’s easy to get rid of mice. Go ahead and get the inspection and move on to the next step.

Proper extermination - sealing up every possible access point and baiting around the inside to kill anything already there - is not cheap, but certainly doable. And many exterminators offer warranties of 1-3 years, meaning that they'll come back for no charge if you have any problems during that period.

Sure, I wouldn't want to deal with a mouse, but for $1000 or so depending on the size of the house, you should be able to get rid of them and make sure they don't come back. So if the house checks all your other boxes, you should be able to work around this one. But before you go any further, bring in a few exterminators to evaluate it and give you their assessment (quotes are usually free).

So I actually just asked my husband this question and he said that you can definitely still by the house. You should A) you should ask that the seller bring down the price of the house because of the mouse problem.
B) you will have a much easier time getting rid of the mice when there are no longer people living there. Wait till the current people move out so there is zero access to food for the mice. Then higher a reputable exterminator to get rid of them and patch up any holes.

Is there any construction projects in the block. That seems to bring mice into the neighboring houses.

Depends on the level of the problem. Mice can do damage to electrical, etc, if there are too many of them.

A good exterminator can help a lot as can cats. BUT, be aware that in some locations, you will fight a neverending battle. If a house backs onto woods, there's a good chance you will never be totally rid of mice even with cats.

I'd bring our a specialist to confirm it could be rectified. You should be able to keep mice out if a house.

Update:
It’s not a huge prob.. the current owners had some a while back and had an exterminator take care of it. Saw some possible droppings more recently..
Spoke with an exterminator who specializes in this, and said they can mouse proof most homes and will come do an inspection when my regular inspectors done.. house isn’t near woods..

Find out how long they guarantee their work, and get it in writing.

You may need scheduled service for the first year or so.

(My cat is always happy to show me the mice he's caught. Ewwww.)
