Hi,
I'm wondering about canned black beans. I've never used them, and was afraid that they could possibly be infested. Do they require checking? Additionally, does anyone have any recipes with them? Thanks.

They can be used in lots of different ways.

What kind of cuisine do you like. They are a very typical ingredient in Mexcian dishes or dishes made with Mexican style seasonings but they also occur in other types of cuisine.

I have seen them used in salads, in chili types of dishes; used in vegan style burgers.

thanks. Could they be used instead of cocoa in baked good, or did I dream that?

Not if you want something edible LOL

There was a time when Weight Watcher followers were making all kinds of horrible desserts with beans because they were 0 points or very low points on one of their plans.

It was never a substitute for cocoa - it was probably some kind of substitute for flour and fat to bind stuff together.

It was much more satisfying to eat a small portion of something delicious than a large portion of something horrible.

Black beans are delicious in the right recipes

I make rice and beans.
Omnom. I’m hungry now Sad(((

Rice

Tomato sauce
Uncooked white rice (that’s what we eat— idk how it would taste with brown rice)
Salt
Pour tomato sauce into a pot
Rinse rice
Put that in the pot
Boil
Then turn on low just when it starts boiling
Leave 20 min mix once in a while to stop the rice from sticking.
When all the tomato sauce is absorbed add salt then fluff the rice with a fork.

Beans

Cook it for a bit
Mush them
Add spices (I put salt a bit of salt chili powder and garlic powder for more taste— I find them too bland.)

Eat with rice (yes in one sane spoon)
It’s soooo gooood
and reminds me of my mother’s cooking

there are vegan baked-goods recipes that use beans, but not to sub for the cocoa. There would be no point, as cocoa powder is vegan, nonfat and has very few calories. It's there for the taste, and the taste of beans is nothing at all like cocoa. Most of the calories in chocolate are from the cocoa fat and the sugar.

Carob powder is used as a cocoa substitute but it only vaguely approximates cocoa--and then more in color and texture than in taste. Far better to honestly call something carob whatever than to call it cocoa-substitute. Carob has a not-unpleasant taste of its own if you know it's carob; if you expect cocoa flavor and get carob, it's jarring and disappointing.

I love black beans. I make bean burgers, tacos, nachos, quesadillas, soups. They are so versatile.
