Until I joined Imamother, my only window into the USA was through media and entertainment. This forum has allowed me to get an insider's view of what it is like to live as a frum woman in the US.

Which leaves me wondering.

There are many, many threads on here that are befuddling to people who live in other first-world nations.
- People struggling with health insurance.
- People struggling after birth because of minimal maternity leave.
- Posters unable to feed their families despite incomes that would place them in the upper-middle class in other countries.
- Posters peddling conspiracy theories.
- Women saddled with student loans.
- And most recently, people struggling to contact unemployment?

The above is especially startling in light of the vast wealth and ingenuity of the American people.

Are Americans happy with the status quo because they don't realize how bad off they are?
Are Americans aware of what day-to-day normal life is like in other countries?
Is your media US-centric?

Please keep politics out of this. I avoid the toxicity of the politics forum.
Please don't take offense at my post. I genuinely want to understand.

OP....

I have spoken to numerous Canadians in lakewood.
They all told me horror stories about waiting months for crucial medical treatment or coming to the US and paying cash...

Please enlighten me otherwise

I think you are taking things out of context. There are many more posters from the US then other countries. So you hear many more complaints about life in the US then any other country. You are interpreting that to mean life is worse in the US.

No. It means people every where have problems. And they like to complain about those problems.

Believe me if there was a website of frum women that the majority were from Canada and and Europe it would also be filled with complaints!

Same here.

And I have many many friends who grew up in Canada who sadly say they cannot think of moving back there to live near family because of the exorbitant cost of living.

1) Then US healththcare is the best in the world. The well do to and poor people have good coverage. Its a percentage of the middle class who have difficulty with Healthcare costs. Obama are was supposed to fix the gap but unfortunately made things worse. Our healthcare system definitely needs major improvement but on the flip side an MRI can be done here same day- 2 days and say, in Canada the wait time is 8 months! And this is WITH the help of the biker cholim organization. (True story)

2) Americans are workaholics. I agree maternity leave needs to expand

3) who had a problem feeding their family on a middle class salary? Maybe you are referring to the high tuition rate outside of Israel? Purely a Jewish issue

4) what conspiracy theories? Our media sucks, are you referring to that?

5) if eligible there is help ranging from partial to full scholarship. Private universities are expensive.

6) I'm not sure what the deal with unemployment is. We had no issue at all. I'm sure some did.

Im well aware how other countries are. The same way you are confused about some aspects of our country, I am confused about yours. Questions are good.

If you're in Canada you aren't exactly in the best place for Healthcare...

Things are even slower in Canada according to my relatives there.

I live in the US currently but have also lived abroad.

I think a few of your hypotheses are spot on. Our media is US-centric. Plenty of people (not speaking just of frum people, but the general population) have never left the country and have little awareness of or interest in conditions in the rest of the world.

And I know you said you wanted to keep politics out of this, but IMHO the hyper-partisan nature of US society also plays a role. Unfortunately, it's a very partisan statement to say you support expanding access to health care, expanding paid parental leave, raising the minimum wage, reducing the cost of higher education, or otherwise expanding the social safety net. These are far from universal values, even though they are in much of the rest of the world.

Your coming from a socialist mindset...

Our government doesn’t mommy is with money just because we gave birth, or just because we live here and breathe. Even in a rich country you’ll have all income types.

I’m from Canada and now live in the US. The healthcare here is exponentially better than Canada. I have a SN child and spend $3k per month on health insurance and would never move back because what I get here is incomparable. Housing here is soooo much cheaper, salaries are so much more.

The healthcare is better because we pay for it. It’s not free or NHS or whatever you call it in Canada.

Housing is cheaper and more expensive depending on location. Where are you currently? The salary part is true for the most part. I don’t know how low income people survive in Canada and Europe.

(Oh wait, I know the answer. The government.)

I hear this repeated on here often. It does not reflect the facts on the ground.
The highest number I could find, pegged Canadians seeking care in the US at 52 000 annually.
Of those, the majority were temporarily residing in the US at that time. This refers to the many elderly "snowbirds" that spend winters in Florida.
In contrast, between 150 000 and 320 000 Americans seek care abroad annually.
Wait times for critical procedures in Canada equal those in the US. For non-emergency procedures, you can wait a long time for free or choose to pay for it privately(like Americans do).

That's so interesting. Do you also consider Israel to be a socialist country?

I never thought of my country that way.

It’s not free in Canada either. Taxes are very high there. I’m in NJ - I paid $600k for a 4000 sq foot house. My brother just paid 1.6 million for 2000 sq ft house in Canada.

Interesting.
Do you mind sharing where you lived in Canada and where in the US you live now?
I agree that there are way better services for frum families with special needs children in the tri-state area than anywhere else in the world (due to the sheer size of the community).
It definitely comes at a huge cost, 3k/month is more than my mortgage!
Where is housing cheaper, yet salaries higher?

Also, my insurance is the best I can buy because of my child but I could get away with a $1500 insurance or less if I didn’t have these needs.
