No. Americans obviously realize things aren't perfect here. That's why there are so many threads on imamother complaining.

What many Americans don't like are Eurupeans constantly putting us down to raise themselves up. We are not you and what works for you doesn't necessarily work for us.

The US is a tremendous country with a heterogeneous population. What works for a comparatively small European country or a low population Canada won't for us.

Just stop it already!

P.S. If it was so hunky dorey over in Europe maybe they should stop relying on American foreign aid!!

I don't like that this thread has spiraled into a weird inappropriate competition. That was not my intention.
Americans are heavily represented on here and often express sentiments that seemingly indicate a lack of knowledge about the world outside of the US (such sentiments actually abound on this thread too).
The US has much to be proud of, but continued growth comes through introspection and awareness.
You cannot solve a problem you don't even acknowledge that you have.
If people think it's normal to struggle to get through to your unemployment office, they will not stop and think, "Hey, how can we help fix this?".

Nobody thought it was normal. That's why they complained. That's why we have elections and vote out incompetent people and hopefully vote in new people who will work hard for the people.

What nobody likes are outsiders criticizing and saying their way is so much better.

How would you like if I started a thread that criticized your country? And said the US does it so much better? I'm sure you wouldn't appreciate it either.

You seem determined to show the superiority of Canada for some odd reason. The reason why ppl go out of the US for medical treatment is nearly always for elective treatments no insurance will cover, like cosmetic dentistry and the like.

I have seen drs top in their field in the entire world within days that I needed it. Sure, insurance is pricey but now my child was diagnosed with asd and he will get aba, speech, ot, the works. He'd get it free if my family of six made less than 130,000- which we dont. My mil had cancer and got world class treatment immediately no waiting all pretty much for free because of her age. My Toronto friend who moved here said the medical care here is incomparable to what there is there. (Her dh happens to be a surgeon too.)

Also, ppl are struggling to get through to their unemployment office because the US is in middle of an unprecedented employment crisis. Nobody think this is normal but understands the circumstances.

Again, not my intention.
I see that you are taking this very personally.
I did not intend to hurt you or anyone else. This thread has veered off from the multicultural discussion I had hoped it would be.
I apologize for inadvertently hurting you.
Now I'm off to light my candles!

IMHO the US also has a culture of extreme individualism where failure is assumed to be 100% your own fault instead of resulting from (or at least related to) broader problems in society. Are you buried under piles of student loans? Well, you should have gone to community college instead. Can you not afford your rent with your current job? Well, you should get a higher paying job (as if those are easy to find). And so on.

English is not my first language and I'm not sure how eloquent the above sounds, but hopefully you get my point.

To the posters who say they don't want to live in a socialized country.. you realize plenty of frum American Jews use public benefits, right? There are frequently threads on Imamother asking about doctors who take Medicaid, questions about EBT/food stamps, recommendations to move to certain communities who give tuition vouchers government. No one, as far as I know, shames these women for taking government money. But once the discussion moves from specific individuals using benefits to broader public questions around benefits, people start screaming about socialism.

This thread was not intended to focus on healthcare.
I do wonder though, have any of you ever pondered the fact that countries that have universal health care originally had the free market system that the US currently has, yet there is no desire to go back? There is talk of improving the system, but Canadians are overwhelmingly - 86.2 percent — for strengthening public health care rather than expanding for-profit services.
Why don't people want to move back towards more privatization?

I opened this thread in order to have a better understanding on the thoughts and beliefs of fellow frum women living in different circumstances.

The responses helped me understand that my initial presumption was correct.

As long as people are unwilling to challenge that which they have been led to believe and look beyond their own little bubble, nothing will change.

It is actually fascinating in light of the fact that the USA was founded on challenging the status quo and charting new paths. Somewhere in the last century, they have gone from being at the forefront of societal improvement, to lagging behind as the rest of the world sped ahead.

Is it due to hyper partisanship? Perhaps other more knowledgeable imas could weigh in.

Thank you to all who participated.

Good Shabbos to all!

You answered your own question with the bolded. America was founded to be different than other countries, why should we start being the same as other countries now? And if its so bad and "lagging behind the rest of the world" then why do so many foreigners want to come to the point that many are coming illegally?

I'm not taking this personally.

You just remind me of many Europeans that I know in real life. They really believe they are better then rude Americans. They are cultured and Americans are uncouth.

Hello! Why do you live here? Oh. You got a job here and couldn't get a job like that in your lovely European country.

Oh. You married an American and your lovely European country has such strict immigration rules your spouse couldn't live there. And the horrible US granted you citizenship just because you married an American.

So please. Spare me. The US has MANY problems. But I really don't want to hear from Europeans how much better they are.

The US saved Europe from Nazi Germany. Just for that they should be eternally grateful. Especially Jewish Europeans. Even though the US could have done more for the Jews of Europe, what they did was more then any other government at the time.
