What Docs Hate: Every Specialty Has Its Thing

An emergency medicine physician at Johns Hopkins, Andrew Stolbach, MD, MPH, recently threw out a question to his followers on Twitter: What things do different specialists hate?
He began his own list.
Dermatologists hate the sun.
Pediatricians hate trampolines.
ENTs hate Q-tips.

Ruth Mitchell, an Australian neurosurgeon, hates quad bikes and guns.
Gastroenterologists hate food allergy tests — at least in the opinion of Irish gastroenterologist Anthony O'Connor.

Vapes, said Robyn Cohen, a pediatric pulmonologist at Boston University School of Medicine.

Any and all holidays that involve drinking got the vote of emergency physician Edwin Leap.
Bilal Asif is a gastroenterology and hepatology fellow. He nominated NSAIDs.
Child psychiatrist Nora McNamara had a list: homework before high school, 7:30 AM school start times, standardized testing in school, and the loss of recess.
Connie Liu offered that she and her fellow ob/gyns hate douche products.
Urologists hate beet juice, according to Ashley Winter.
Many nominations crossed specialties. Pretty much everyone hated smoking and 5 PM consults. And COVID-19. Well-meaning friends and family sharing horror stories — of childbirth, medication reactions, hospitalizations — with frightened patients led to near- universal sighs. Several medications were nominated, including docusate, buprenorphine, and prednisone, as well as polypharmacy. Research via Google and patient queries that began with "I read on the internet..." generated a number of votes.
The question eventually garnered over 5000 retweets and comments, ranging from the obscure to the obvious, the hilarious to the serious.
What gets your vote, and why? Join the discussion in the comments section.

Doctors who don't take responsibility for misdiagnosing

Also:
Doctors who think they’re god & there was never anyone as brilliant, skilled & experienced as *he*

Doctors who don’t let you get a word in edgewise, “diagnose” you without a real exam...

Doctors who make you wait for hours just so it should seem that they’re a very busy (=good??) practice.

Doctors who just think of you as “the patient” but forgetting that within “the patient” there’s a beating heart with emotions and a whole person, family and life behind.

Doctors who are “so busy” they don’t take the decency to call with results while an anxious person is waiting... letting you run after them for days/weeks and nothing.

Doctor sending a person for testing just as a precaution, but making it sound by the way of him not talking and just saying to get it done ASAP like he’s thinking you have the worst sickness in the world...

Bh, for the most part our experience with doctors have been the exact opposite and we’re very grateful for the years of schooling and residency and all it entails till they get to this point of power & yes, pretty often selflessness .

Doctors who don't like to be asked questions!!!!!!! And doctors who don't take the time to explain diagnosis and medications.

I'm a nurse: what I don't like, top of the list -- when people expect the nurse to be their personal servant.

Example: patient who is mobile, lucid, and perfectly capable of walking to the cooler himself, asking the nurse to bring him a cup of water "because that's her job!"

Doctors who see you in pain, distressed, limited range of mobility, long documented medical history -

And they prescribe you an antidepressant because you are a woman, and "it's just stress". Banging head

ETA: Sorry, it's not "cute". I realize you wanted a light hearted thread. I just can't. Sad

Doctors that can't think out of the box even when patients liaison knows the doctors decision is life threatening.
Liaison turns out to be right but at that point who cares? Pateint is dead.

Doctors that have the nerve to scream at mothers that they know something to be a fact and not even a discussion worth having and then when they are proven wrong have no issue not apologizing for screaming.

Doctors and therpists that scream at parents or patients for the absurdity of an idea, then realizing that the idea is good and offering it to other patients without giving credit where credit is due.

How much longer should I stay on my soapbox?

Crust - you're on a roll - keep going!

Dermatologists who can prescribe one cream after the other until they hit the jackpot or when the rash goes away on its own. It's a win-win situation.

Doctors who say "it's a virus and should take a week to go away or take antibiotics for a week and it should be gone by then"

ONTOH Crust, do you have room on your soap box for me?
