We never wore nightgowns but once we were bas mitzvah we put on a skirt before coming downstairs.

I wouldn't say it's weird. In chabad girls are tznius from the age of 3 and my DDs wear a tznius nightgown from this age. They sell loads in Bnei Brak, even with sheep on them for those who are makpid to only have kosher animals.
