But a feature is much more work/much “scarier” I think than a personal essay for a not-very-published writer.

I'm not sure I agree. To me, blindly submitting a completed personal piece is a lot scarier. It's more vulnerable.
Submitting a feature, on the other hand, isn't as high-stakes PLUS, if they accept the pitch, you work *with* the editors, gaining from their guidance and direction, so it ends up being less scary in the long run.
