Let me get this straight:

It's the first day of school, and your 4-year-old is crying.

The principal sees this, walks over, and says NOT

"Good morning young man! We are so glad you will be learning here. Welcome! I'm Principal Schwartz. What's your name?" but instead barks, "I don't like your son's haircut."

He sure has great people skills!

I didn’t read the whole thread so someone may have said this already . The entire conversation should have been discussed privately. The principal was wrong and disrespectful to make a comment in public. Your DH was wrong to answer back in an undermining manner as it came across as disrespecting the authority. The Rebbe’s comments should have had not been part of this discussion at all . His comment was completely out of line and none of his business.
If I were your DH though, as wrong as he may have been for answering back, I still would have been just as livid.

I'm not exactly sure either what it means either. I do know some ultra orthodox yeshivas have a rule that the haircut has to be all 1 length (obviously except payos), and no longer than maybe a #4-5. But, they make it very clear that that's their rule....which is basically, variation in length. Opinions aside on whether it's a great rule, it's at least very clear what the rule is for everyone.

This was so painful for me to read.
In my school, which opened a couple of weeks ago, we had a week's worth of professional development about sensitivity training (above and beyond what we usually do which is impressive in its own way) and how to speak to children upon their return to school after so many months.
What planet did this menahel drop down from that he was so oblivious to what families have gone through in the past 6 months?
I am seriously not comprehending how this was even possible.

The rebbe was completely out of line.

My blood is boiling from that alone.

I think he should be called out on it. Either dh or OP should talk to him about what he said.

Principal was an idiot too.

Dh? I’m on his side.
