To follow up on PP - I’ve been told by a few drs/pediatricians in NJ that it is very hard to make a salary. Insurance is sky high and everyone is on subsidized health care which pays a joke. It’s almost not worth it to work in NJ - especially in areas with little private health care and then you need to hire many cheaper PA and NP for it to be worth it. I think this is the future of healthcare unfortunately

Op I thought I wrote the Op but I'm only in Lakewood a year.
I have big kids that b"h rarely need a doctor and I just had a baby.
I put myself on Dr. Fenster's waiting list last fall and got a callback in March so it was just a couple of months to get in. Might be worth a try.

Who did you go to for your child's growth issues? I had seen someone in Brooklyn a few years ago but would like to try someone else in NJ. Care to share?

Unfortunately For really good you have to travel. There are not many excellent specialists around. Some ppl will use drs in Monmouth medical center but my pediatrician is insistent on having us travel - CHOP (ENT), New Brunswick (GI and eye dr), Delaware, Morristown (GI) - for specialist. Rarely does he approve someone less than an hour away. So make sure you do really good research. One benefit of having a good pediatrician is he can recommend great specialists and follow up with them.

I used to use Dr. Fenster. Switched in January when he stopped taking UHC. By the time I switched there was minimum half an hour wait time every single time I went. And he kept getting new pa/np’s so I no longer felt like they knew me. It also become increasingly difficult to choose which doctor you wanted and his hours were cut shorter than they originally were as well. I also could not get an after school well visit appointment without a six month waiting period... when I joined the practice originally it was small, they knew you, they were on time and a pleasure. By now I’m not sure it’s as you described unless it changed in the last 9 months

You are right- last winter the office was not running well. By now those new NP's are settled and efficient. Last winter Dr. Deardon had just died pretty suddenly and they were short staffed. I find I almost never wait more than 5-10 minutes, if even that much. And the newer Dr, Dr. Zamel, is really good too. The wait in the room is sometimes longer than it used to be, but still way shorter than in any other doctor's office I've ever used.

Yes I find that the wait in the room is a bit long (thanks to Covid there's no wait in the waiting room). But honestly I'm so used to waiting for way longer by any doctor that it doesn't bother me so much.
Also, I see that when the Dr is in the room he gives you his full attention and doesn't rush out. I find that that goes hand in hand with waiting.
If a Dr has short waiting times he's usually rushing in and out of your room and doesn't give you his time. (Not saying this is true for everyone, just something I've noticed in general.)

I’m happy to hear that. I thought he was excellent, thorough, patient and knowledgeable while I was there. I only left because he stopped taking my insurance and I felt like some of his “advantages” like small practice and short wait times were history. I’m glad they’re back in place. I’d highly recommend using his practice! Was just commenting on the waiting issue...

Looking for the same since Dr. Hirsch from chemed passed away Sad
We’ll never have another doc like him.
That being said, chemed just brought in 3 doctors from Jersey Shore who are supposed to be great.

Dr. Lerner is amazing!
He takes your concerns seriously. He gave me his cell phone number so I could send him pictures of my child so we could keep track of an issue.

Op, I think you should reevaluate the situation regarding the Chemed pediatricians. What difference does it really make if you work there? If anything it will give you protection and pull when you need it. Dr kaweblum used one of the other pediatricians for his own baby. I could understand if you are stuck with the various pa’s that work there, but if they really did take care in some new pediatricians then it looks pretty hopeful.

I worked at chemed and used their pediatricians at the same time. It was very convenient for me and I found the doctors I used were professional about it.
I worked in the administration, not sure what your position is. Maybe if you’re an MA it’s more awkward I don’t know. But I am very happy with the practice .

I know this is almost a year old.. But I'm reading through this because I was looking into switching practices in Lakewood.
It's interesting that you say this about Dr Lerner because the straw that broke the camels back was that he didn't catch something on my child by a physical and it was brought up to be a serious condition just a week later. He also gave me his cell phone to send pics or wtvr not... But he totally didn't take my concerns seriously and I just told my husband 4 times CHEMED didn't take my concerns seriously and they were actually very serious concerns. The 4 times were not Dr Lerner, just the 4th time was.
But I'm happy to read this because he agreed to send my child to the testing I brought up and I will give him a second chance b4 I look elsewhere.
