I'm looking for tips for teaching a two yr old to fall asleep in his (toddler) bed. Ideally I'd like to not have to stay in the room eventually (not sure if that is too tall an order though).
So far I rock him to sleep, but he has started resisting. I need a way to encourage him to stay in bed, and settle down.

Def way too old to rock to sleep.
If he leaves his room just keep walking him back

You should not be rocking a 2 year old to sleep. If he isnt able to fall asleep himself I personally would keep him in a crib and sleep train a bit. Otherwise put him in bed and let him try to fall asleep alone. If he gets up put him back in his bed without talking to him. Keep doing it until he falls asleep on his own. It will take time, but he will get used to it and eventually go to sleep by himself.

Get him 2 or 3 stuffed animals and say “I am going to give each animal a big hug and a big kiss from me! If you need a hug and kiss from Mommy, take them from the animals! Night night I love you!”
Maybe get a nightlight so it’s not too dark.
And maybe sit outside the door if he still needs.

I appreciate all the input.
I do NOT have patience to keep putting him back!
The stuffy idea is cute... but will still need some stronger teaching, such as the above mentioned method of putting him back each time... is it meant just to make the whole ordeal more warm?
Any other ideas?

You may not have the patience, but it will be so much better for you in the long run! I have 2 kids 2 and 3 and they both stay in their beds. Occasionally I will have to poke my head in bec they get out in their room, but it will be so much better for you!! Maybe you and your husband can take turns for like a bit each so you wont go crazy?

He should either be in a crib or the door should be locked.
You put him in and leave the room.
