Impressive! Many people, all ages, were wearing masks in BP over Yom Kippur.

Something or someone had a bigger effect on them, than all the ambulance sirens in March/April/May, when very few wore masks in BP.

What do you think it was?

De Blasio threatened to shutter the schools. It's that simple.

In those days, many of the experts were saying that masks don’t help at all. Just saying...
There was a change of mind from one minute to the next

Most rabbis said in shul to wear masks in order for the government to lay off of us.

Exactly! At the height of the pandemic, we were told no masks!

I assume you mean health experts. I live in BP. Which experts said no masks?

Yup. The public health departments really messed up on messaging.

To be fair, it is a novel virus that has thrown up curveball after curveball. At first it seemed like it was much like the flu. Then they saw it was worse than the flu, and doesn't only attack the lungs, but affects the vascular system as much or if not more. First they thought lack of oxygen was killing people - and they saw that it was actually the overactive immune response that was killing many patients. Etc, etc. It's spread via surfaces! No, it's airborne! Large particles! Small particles! Aerosolized particles! The virus was one step ahead of the medical establishment for a really long time.

The problem is that the window for public education is very small, and the confusion in the medical world spilled over into inconsistency in public health messaging. To make matters worse, national and local politics got involved in what should have been a purely health-related issue.

And the rest is history in the making.

Yup. In the beginning of the pandemic we were told not to wear masks. We don't need it and it's disgusting to wear them when the doctors and nurses are short on PPE.

I guess you have a short term memory. It was widely publicized in the beginning that masks for the general population is a strong no. Later the tune changed.

Our Shul only allowed us in with masks - and you can't carry on Yom Kippur so people needed to wear the masks in the street. I'd imagine this was the case with quite a lot of shuls in BP. I don't think many people are worried about school closures because schools are closing now for close to two weeks anyway. I think, maybe more nervous about shul closures for simchas beis hashoeiva and simchas torah

Do people really expect to have normal hakafos on simchas torah?

Sure. I think most shuls expect that. You can have regular hakafos with masks.

I don't know. I wish we could have some kind of hakafos - can you imagine a year without simchas torah?

Expect, yes. In places where it's been business as usual, that includes hakafos as usual.

Will there be a crackdown that puts a stop to it? Only time will tell.

My husband's shul was floating the idea around to just dance with your own family. But not sure how that can work space wise.
