First year making a sukkah, and I bought a plug-in pendant as a light. Do I need to worry about rain? Do I need to buy something special that's waterproof?

You have to make sure the fixture and wires/ plugs are waterproof.

If you live where its likely to rain then it needs to be waterproof. In England we occasionally had romantic candlelit meals over Yom Tov since my father felt this was an unneccesary precaution.

If you live in Israel, its still a good idea, because we sometimes get storms over Chol HaMoed.

If you live where rain is not going to happen, you don't need to worry.

We use strands of white xmas lights. They are made for outdoors, pretty and you can add strands if you need more light.
