What are common mistakes people make but they’re wrong? Answer to poll is “I am bored
Hidden:

with
doing the same chores every day”.

“Should I say I’m bored with it” or I’m bored of it?”

Many adjectives and verbs can be followed by a preposition, and choosing the right one isn’t always easy. There are many cases where the appropriate preposition is fixed, and we show these in the Macmillan Dictionary. For example, you can be angry with someone or angry about something. But language changes over time, and we sometimes find that people are using a different preposition to express the same idea.

Take the case of ‘bored’. Let’s imagine that you want to say you’ve seen enough football on TV. So you might say “I am bored with watching football”. However, in recent years it’s become increasingly common to hear people saying “I am bored of watching football”.

So which is right: bored with, or bored of? Well, many people still regard “bored of” as incorrect, but really it’s a generational thing. What our evidence shows is that bored with and bored of are now used with almost equal frequency, but that among younger people “bored of” is more common. Both are acceptable, but it’s good to be aware that not everyone will accept “bored of” - at least, not yet.

If you’re uncertain about trends like this, you’ll find plenty of useful advice in the Macmillan Dictionary.

Without us grammar nerds, you’d have people advising you about boots that resist warm water, would worry about pandas shooting you after eating your food, and your children throwing you from a train.
