Why aren't we doing anything about the inspections?

I read the news and I want to cry. I see that Jewish business and schools are being targeted (yes I'm sure some really are not trying to follow any rules, but not all by far). I was on the fence about whether or not it was really anti-Semitism or real fear of the illness until child cares that were in the same building as schools were all shut down - that is pure anti-Semitism, only targeting us. And today I saw a picture of a grocery store owner getting fined - when that is essential. It may not be my office or my husband's yeshiva - but we could be next. Why are we just allowing this to happen? Why are we not bombarding the news channels with calls and emails demanding they cover the unfairness? Why aren't we making lawsuits and organized, peaceful protests (imagine neat rows of people in masks in front of city hall)? We have organizations and leaders - why doesn't anyone step up and say something instead of allowing this, day after day?

First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a socialist.

Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a trade unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.

I think it's a tall order to ask the media to come when one wants while treating them poorly when one doesn't. So, I think the idea of getting the media to come to help is not reasonable right now. That's the flip side to the other events that happened with the media recently. One can't have it both ways.

I think it would be important to get the exact facts. Which are cases of just wrong citations being issued? Which are issues of legitimate citations being issued but they are applying enforcement only here? (ie. a grocery store might be cited for violating some other ordinance that is non-COVID, etc. and that isn't being enforced typically anywhere else, ever.) Accurate data is very important or an outcry may sound merely like a tantrum.

Would love to see leaders because I feel the same way as you, but with the added where are our leaders. From the modern orthodox rabbis , to the agudah , young Israels, ou , Yeshivas etc. Where are our leaders to organize this ?!?!

You're right - which is why I haven't called any news stations myself. I know I can't pin things down - and am wondering why I haven't heard anything from our askanim, who should be getting the facts straight, and have lawyers who can tell what is right and what is not.

Additionally - am I the only one who thinks that a better plan if the politicians really wanted order and safety would be to have inspectors who come with a goal of fixing before punishing? That schools should be open, with inspectors coming to help school figure out how to do it as safely as possible, and only fining if reasonable suggestions are implemented.

One good example would be boro park lumber they got a fine yesterday even though they are essential. Hello Home Depot .... they only got it because it’s owned by a Jew. The fine was removed a few hours later with ppls help. A [gentile] lady crashed her car cuz she was so busy yelling at a chassidishe guy walking outside without a mask. Umm masks aren’t required outdoors only in crowded places.

You could just plain and simple comply with laws and regulations, then inspections would not bother you...

I posted about people who are complying.... fines still hurt even if you are wearing a mask. I also posted about rules that are targeting Jews and not non-Jews being unfair (specifically child cares). You can follow the rules all day long and still be targeted.

We can't organize a peaceful protest because we're all busy taking care of our kids who have remote learning.
On my autistic kid's school chat, we were discussing what an autism protest would look like. Kids would be running away from parents, and instead of helping us catch our kids, bystanders would assume that our kids are social distancing from us.
By shutting down schools, Cuomo shut down our ability to do anything organized including protests.

Unfortunately many of the citations are valid under current laws and/or executive order. One that wasn't (BP lumber) was actually rescinded.

I agree we need to do more. A peaceful masked distanced protest in a place that's allowed (like Ger did in Israel) could make an impression.

Working behind the scenes to calm down rhetoric on both sides and move forward as the numbers continue to improve.

Whatever was wrongly issued should definitely be fought, and each citation comes with a court date to do just that. Maybe the community can set up a fund to pay legal fees (though a cost/benefit analysis might show the fines are cheaper, but I doubt that).

There are other things to do, like improving compliance wherever that is obviously lacking.

There is also lack of clarity, and people have to know the details of the rules so nobody violates them inadvertantly. If a store is only supposed to have pickup at the door, they should know that and enforce it.

And daven that things get better, both the spread of the illness and the crackdown.

I have no idea what the rate of compliance is so I have no comment to make on that

However I can't tell you how many people have questioned me about the non-compliance among Jews. These are not anti-Semitic people by the way. Chiefly they are shocked because they thought Jews were smart - I don't take that as a backhanded insult Smile

I think that the food store that got a summons was supposed to be a carry out store and as such, was only allowed to deliver the food or carry it out to the curb. The store was hot so the doors were open and the inspector wandered in.
Probably the only inspectors that can be fought are those who actually don't have a case. I am not sure how easy it is to prove bias if the defendant is guilty.

Well, in my community, Doh was on street yesterday, handing out masks to masked people & another person was marking off. Don't know if they were counting masked people or how many unneeded masks they were distributing.

If you have a doubt if this is targeted or not check out today’s briefing. The governor is very nicely asked if he needs to apologize to the orthodox community like De Blasio did and if he thinks he needed to communicate more to them before the uptick happened.
