Lol. I saw this too late.

But seriously how do you drop the eggs into hot water without cracking them?

I would have a nice scrambled eggs dunked in water dish.

Using a large serving spoon, I lower them slowly (they shouldn't knock into the floor of pot). Works well.

This thread was started in jest because someone complained on another thread that I'm too serious.

In the end there are pretty good ideas on this thread.

Thanks 😊

Your avatar certainly gives that impression but after reading a few posts and getting to know you on a deeper level I can see the "fun" part of you!

On a more serious note, does anyone else cook in odd numbers? I was always taught to cook a minimum of 3 and after that, evens are fine. Dh's family does only odds.

The way I learnt it, you start with a minimum of three, then continue adding two at a time. That way, if any are found to have bloodspots when you open them, there is a good chance that a majority are kosher, and then the pot would still be considered kosher. If you have an even number of eggs, there may be equal numbers of kosher and bloody eggs, and then the pot would be treif.

Nowadays eggs are candled before selling, and aren't fertilised anyway, so the chances of finding one blood spot, let alone a whole bunch, is much lower. Still it could happen, especially for the Ima who goes and chases away the chicken to collect the eggs, so there is no reason to abandon a good halacha.

How do I cook them?
Let me count the ways.

Chase the chicken far away,
With corn kernels give her pay.
In a pan or in a pot,
Odd numbers to avoid bloodspot.

Melt the butter, fry them fast
Cheese is an option, not a must.
Use lower heat, and spoon to mix
If scrambled eggs you're fain to fix.

Put the water in a pot.
(It may be forty quarts - or not!)
Then boil it until its hot.
Add the eggs with all due caution.
No bangs or bumps - a gentle motion.

A perfectly poached egg is rare
They must be handled with great care
To ensure you get it right,
I now refer you to this site:
https://www.bbcgoodfood.com/vi.....video

To eat soft boiled eggs with toast
Boil for four minutes at most.
For hard boiled eggs, please cook for longer
Under heat, the egg grows stronger.
Still, eight minutes is boiled, mamesh.
Eighteen minutes will make it chametz!

Baked eggs I have never tried.
I'll let others be your guide.
Finally, the eggs in chulent.
I'm not Sephardi, so I shouldn't.
It can be very good, they say,
But I would rather stay away.

Pickled eggs, would you like to try?
To be honest, nor would I.
Google, if you want to try it,
Now let us leave this painful topic.

Omelettes and souffle and such,
Are things that I would never touch.
For that you need a Cordon Bleu
I look at it and just say, 'Er...'

I've told you all you need to know.
I'm sure that you are good to go.
For further hints please ask another
Imamother.

ETA Edited whenever I think of another verse. I'm trying to avoid work this evening!

More "How do I not cook eggs?"

Poached. I don't poach.
But, yeah all the other things.

And I do boil in numbers too with a minimum of 3. (I think the 3 min is more important to prevent halachic issues if there's a blood spot than the odd numbers overall)

I love poached eggs. Can never get them right but they sell this awesome thing called egg poaching bags. Disposable little bags you can cook the eggs in. Works great and I get my poached eggs.

A lot of you are doing way too much work. Put them in a pot, cover with cold water, put on flame to medium-high, set a timer for 21 minutes. When it rings, turn off flame and immediately dump as much water as you can down the sink, it’s okay if you don’t get every drop out. Then refill the pot with cold water and leave the eggs in that for as long as you want, at least a couple minutes.

They’re always yellow and easy to peel.

I’m surprised to see so many of you first boil the water. Thought cold water is a must.

And I sometimes add a little salt. Don’t remember where I read/heard (maybe here?) that salt will help eggs not to leak out if there’s a little crack in the eggs.

How to Hard-Boil Eggs
for people like me who otherwise can't get this right

1) Place eggs into wire colander with handle* - as many as you want
2) Place colander into pot
3) Fill with cold water until eggs are covered
4) REMOVE colander, set aside
5) Place pot on stove, cover
6) Turn on high
7) When water reaches a strong boil, carefully remove lid
8) Wearing an oven mitt, slowly lower the colander into the water
9) Replace lid of pot
10) Set 18 minute timer
11) Lower heat to medium
12) 18 minutes later, remove pot from stove
13) Remove colander and pour out water from pot
14) Replace colander in pot and fill pot with cold water
15) Voila! Lots of easy-to-peel eggs.

*I use my generic Instant Pot steamer basket

18 minutes?!? Won't the yellow part be really green and crumbly by then?

I put on my morning robe
Walk across the field to the barn
Take some eggs from the chicken coop
Fill the big black pot with water
Put it up to boil
Then cook the eggs for 10 minutes
Then close the flame and have cold water run for a few minutes
Simple as that!!!!

Close the flame? Running water? What kind of modernishe nonesense is this? What about chopping firewood, feeding the flame, turning the coals? SMH Can't Believe It

Boil water on a high flame. Add eggs when water is really boiling, and cover the pot. Set timer for 5 minutes. When it rings, reset timer for 5, shut the flame, but still leave the cover on the pot. After 5 more minutes, take eggs out and shock with an ice bath.
Perfect hard boiled eggs with a slightly gooey center.
If you want perfect hard boiled eggs with a bright yellow center, but not gooey at all, add 1 minute to the first timer, making it 6 minutes on the flame.
