This is so true. My sister and I used to get spanked every now and then when we were little, and we're totally over it. No lasting trauma from that.
What we both are still dealing with was the way our mom would talk to us sometimes, with a very judgmental style that made us feel like no matter what we did, it would never be good enough. It took me years of therapy to move on, and my sister is still struggling with the negative words that echo in her head.
Mom wasn't even yelling or angry when she'd say these things, they were just mean, and did a lot of harm to our self esteem. If you asked her about it years later, she wouldn't even remember saying it, or wouldn't have thought it was a big deal.
You have to be careful, because you never know what is going to stick in your child's head and haunt them for a very long time.
