Hi,
I’ve seen women sometimes weighing the pieces of dough for the strands so they are more perfect and the challah comes out perfectly so I’m wondering how much do you measure one strand for 6 braided challah or 4 braided challah. Help me out I make good tasty challah but they look awful

That’s a good idea. I don’t weigh but it’s easy if you roll the dough out and shape into a rough rectangle, then cut equal squares.

I did once see someone give exact measurements but the main thing is to divide the dough into even pieces. I divide my 5lb dough into 5 and adjust the weights till they are about all the same. Then each allocated dough gets divided into 4 and I repeat the process to make them around the same weight. They key is uniformity among the strands.

For six braids, 3 oz is a good amount, 2 1/2 oz if you want them small.
For four strands, 4 oz.

A also do 4oz for 6 strands.
But I think it also depends how big a challa you make. If you do a small challa, 4oz 6 strands will look weird.
I do 6lb flour, 1 1/2 lb challas, 4oz 6 strands. Comes out very nice size and shape. I know it's to the bigger side, but that's the way we like it
