A really smart social worker once taught me the acronym HALT. Hungry Angry Lonely Tired. This works for my kids like 99% of the time. When they are getting really dysregulated first I see if they need to eat. If that works great. If it doesnt I move on to tired then lonely. If all of those are not the cause, I assume they are angry about something that happened and I try to get them to a place to get out their feelings. One of my kids (10) is super super into talking about his feelings and usually will sit down with me and tell me what is bothering him. Another one of my kids (6) wont talk about feelings so I find taking him outside is the best way to calm down. You just have to think about what makes your kid tick.
