I'm looking to buy an extra freezer without a fridge to stock up on things, which do you recommend?

Frigidaire makes great freezers. That's what we bought 8/9 years ago.

An upright freezer as opposed to a chest, the largest size you can handle!

If I don’t know if I can make room for an upright freezer is upright is much better than a chest freezer? Also how big is your extra freezer?

I recently got a Frigidaire upright freezer, 20 cubic, it fit through all my doors. It's narrow but tall

I'm not sure there's cheaper ones now. Since COVID they're out of stock or running VERY low on supply.

I purchased mine online, I THINK (slipped my mind) at Lowes. Was $899 before tax and warrantee.

I didn't realize it is so expensive.

If you fill it up, it is so hard to dig around a chest freezer to get something from the bottom. I have to check the size of my upright but I really regret not getting bigger at the time.

Upright, 20 cubic, frost free. I bought one that needs defrosting because I got it cheaper and it’s a pain-in the neck (over 5 years ago- 650$)
If you are not particular with color you mightget a good price
Where do you live? If tri state area,
Monsey and monroe stores are known to have the best stock and prices
In lakewood, town appliance has great service
Otherwise, lowes and Home Depot

what does that mean it needs defrosting?

A frost free freezer does not build up ice on the inside. A traditional freezer does, so it needs to be periodically defrosted (that is, have the ice removed).

We purchased a 17 cubic foot upright frost free freezer, so it would fit through the doorway going down to the basement.

Oh I didn't even think of that. thanks. How do I know if it will fit, don't they wheel it on that upright wheeling thing diagonally? so any height should fit? Was yours also about $1000?

Call Plug Ins. I think it's somewhat less than that.
Measure the width and height of the doorway before you call. Let them know about any narrow turns that need to be made on the way down.

By description on my 20 cubic it said, like a 17 cubic but with a 20 cubic capacity. It is pretty narrow but talk. The inside isn't as deep as a 17 cu, but each shelf has more space in the height.

I wonder.
