Ds said his legs were hurting the whole day, and may also have had a headache. Should I take him for a culture in the morning?

Yes. My ds had that at that age, was usually strep.

too early for it to show up on the culture test?

Never had the experience of it being too early. Make sure to do a rapid and an overnight test. My kids never test positive on rapid even when overnight is positive.

My dr says to wait at least 24h with symptoms before testing.

Sometimes a culture is too early, but I wouldn’t push it off. Get him checked out, and worst case if the culture is negative and everything looks ok you can culture again in a few days.
As a btw, it could be strep but it could be many other things too- growth pains, virus, Lyme...

OP what was it?
I have two kids with leg pain now, nothing else.
A different kid had strep last week, but had fever.
Should I suspect strep, corona, or what?

If someone in the house had strep, good chance it's strep. For sure worth checking out.

Good chance it's strep. One of my kids only symptom of strep is leg pain.

Definitely take him for throat culture. Have had that many times.

Check his shoes. Every time my kid runs around in natives his feet hurt the next day.

As a child I had this plus stomachaches for weeks. It turns out I had strep in my blood which came up in blood work. My throat culture was negative. This was found after running around from doctor to doctor and doing all kinds of tests. Antibiotics cured me quickly
