It's not common at all. Maybe one person's nickname but it's rare and definitely not as its own name.

It's not a nickname. It's a proper name, but not a common one. I know a very chassidish Rivka Ella.

Yes, Ella is a proper name. I had a neighbor named Ella.

Ella is an old fashioned Yiddish name becoming mainstream these days like Kayla and Bayla. The origin is in chassidish families but you'll find it in other circles unlike other Yiddish names like Genendel, Fradel, Mushka and Trana which haven't been picked up outside of the Chassidic groups where they're popular.
