I am 100% sure that he is not doing it on purpose, but I guess it's just an instinct for him and when I try to explain to him that it makes it impossible for me to put his shoes on when he curls up his toes, I can tell he doesn't understand. Is there any obvious solution?

had that with my daughter while buying shoes... try gently tickling the bottom of ur sons foot - they usually straighten out toes for a second - then quickly slip shoes on

Sounds like hes a new walker. You have to rub/brush the bottom of his feet to get him used to the feeling of wearing shoes.

Dd did it when because her old shoes were small snd hurt her toes. She was afraid any shoes is going to hurt her

very common in that age range. gently lift toes, and try to get the shoe on in a quick one-motion twist. I believe it's a natural reflex.
